Asthma

Benefits of exercise

  • Builds muscular strength and endurance. This is especially important to respiratory muscles.
  • Produces greater efficiency in extracting oxygen and thereby increasing the body’s work capacity.
  • Decreases sensitivity to dyspnea.
  • Makes airways less sensitive to triggers, resulting in less exacerbation.
  • Reduces dependence on medication

Exercise recommendations

  • Ensure thorough warm up.
  • Medication to be used prior to activity.
  • Ensure adequate hydration, ventilation and temperature.
  • Monitor dyspnea
  • 30 minute sessions initially.
  • Emphasis on progression of duration over intensity.
  • Frequency – 3-5 days a week.
  • Pursed lip breathing. Breathe in through your nose, keeping your lips firmly together except at the very centre. Breathe out twice as long as you breathe in, and when exhaling, “blow the air” out with a steady effort.
